It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood at the Liberty/Lundy Track and Field Classic. This dynamic event was held at the Ted Gormley Stadium on Saturday, April 16th. Liberty and Lundy Enterprises (Pizza Hut) sponsored this event.
I had the honor to interview some of the brightest and most talented individuals from area high schools. The energy that I received from those students was beyond explanatory and everyone was there in support of each other's victories and defeats.
By this being a free, family event I am saddened to say that support from some families weren't there. If so, the stadium would have been packed to capacity. These young people worked very hard by training everyday and staying positive for this event. I am proud of each of them.
One of the top schools St. Augustine won all three relays. The 400 meter relay team had a record time of 42.32, the 800 meter relay team had a record time of 1:26.45 and the 1,600 meter relay had a record time of 3:19.60. Landry wins second with 102 points and Ehret, in third with .99.
St. Augustine's Karjuan Williams, set a meet record of 1 minute 51.04 for the 800 meter run, 39.81 seconds for the 300 meter hurdles along with 800 and 1,600 relay teams.
In the girl's competition, St. Mary's won first place with 108 points, Blenk winning second with 101 and McDonough 35 in third with 54.4 points.
Among others, Mr. Jackie Calendar, referee for the Liberty/Lundy Track and Field Classic; have been participating in this event since it began. You can tell just by looking into their eyes, that they were sincere about this competition and they didn't mind dedicating their free Saturday to encourage the students
The top four teams that will win from each district would move to the regional championship, then to state competition.
